Expedition Overview

Go Deeper into Mongolia with our Extreme Motoring Journey across the Gobi Desert

Few places are, and feel, as sublimely remote as Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, where a mystic silence reigns, velociraptors once roamed, and the near-mythic snow leopard is real. The Gobi Desert is the coldest and one of the highest deserts in the world, occupying about 1/3 of Mongolia. It’s the largest desert in Asia and it’s not just the orange sands like you may be thinking and there is much more to it. On this epic motoring journey, you will be driving deeper into this great desert. Unlike the typical touristy Gobi experiences which only focuses on one segment of the desert, this extreme adventure will take you further into places like Great Gobi A and Great Gobi B. The two parts together forms one of the largest terrestrial protected areas in the world. Most of us avoid traveling absurd distances, but in Mongolia, you can’t get anywhere without one hell of a journey and that’s what this expedition will offer, letting you explore places where no tourists have ever gone before.

Expedition Itinerary

Accommodation: Novotel Hotel or similar

If Mongolia’s yin is its pristine countryside, then Ulaanbaatar conforms nicely to its yang. Once you arrive in Ulaanbaatar, you will be received at the airport by our team and then transferred to Novotel Hotel. You are requested to arrive in UB by noon so that you can rest for a while and then get ready for the expedition briefing in the evening followed by a very special expedition welcome dinner. A wonderful opportunity to meet all the fellow expedition members before the start of the epic adventure.

Our Recommendation: You will not need more than a day to explore Ulaanbaatar. Depending on your time of arrival, you can explore the city and its surroundings on your own or we could help you with our recommendations. You will be spending almost a day during the last day of the trip so you will have sufficient time to explore the city. You can come in a day earlier if you want to acclimate to the new time zone and take some rest before the start of your adventure.

DAY 2: Flight to Gobi

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-2 Accommodation: Ger Camp (Gobi Nomad Lodge)

Distance: 90 kms | Drive Time: 2 hours | Terrain: Dirt Roads

Early morning after breakfast, you will be transferred to UB airport from where you will take a flight to Gobi (Dalanzadgad Airport) from where you will officially begin your motoring journey. The flight duration is approx. 1 hr 20 min. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your Ger camps where you will spend your first day like a typical Nomad. After checking into your respective ger camps, we will introduce you to your expedition machines followed by a detailed expedition briefing. After lunch, we will head out for a short drive (1 hr. from the Camp) to Bayanzag, also known as Flaming Cliffs, to kickstart your overland adventure. Flaming Cliffs in Bayanzag where red and orange hues come together to create an awe-inspiring sight. Home to ancient dinosaur fossils, the Bayanzag area is an exciting destination allowing you to get up close to massive dinosaur remains. You will be accompanied by one of the finest research specialists from the Mongolian Academy of Science who will give you a private tour across this world-renowned place. This is where paleontologist, Roy Chapman Andrews found dinosaur bones and eggs. The surrounding landscape is a beautiful combination of rocks, red sand and scrubs. You can spend time exploring the cliffs, and in the evening, you will enjoy a wonderful al-fresco style welcome dinner watching the beautiful sun set behind the desert. The sunset here is magical, the sun shining on the cliff creates the color of the fire and hence the name Flaming Cliffs. After dinner we drive back to our camps.

DAY 3: Khongor Sand Dune

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-3 Accommodation: Ger Camps

Distance: 230 kms | Drive Time: Approx. 6 Hrs | Terrain: Dirt Roads

After breakfast, we will begin our motoring expedition by heading towards the beautiful gorges of the imposing Altai Mountain Chain – Yol valley. This is a protected site since 1965 that lies 62 km north-west of Dalanzadgad and spans across an area of 70 square kms. Ancient rivers carved those green valleys and was named after the bearded vulture, which is called Yol in Mongolian. We will spend the morning trekking through these deep and narrow gorges of this valley which is located within the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. This mountainous region was formed by the same tectonic activity that created the Himalayas and is part of the Gobi Altai Range – the outer crumple zone of the Himalayan geological activity.

From here we will then head west towards Mongolia’s largest and most beautiful sand dunes, Khongoryn Els, and the terrain is mostly dirt tracks. “Els” is the Mongolian word for sand dunes and “Hongoryn” describes the exquisite pale tawny color of one of the world’s most beautiful dunes fields. These impressive dunes are of 275 meters high in some places, stretching from East to West for over 100 km. We will explore the dunes by foot and later in the evening return to our camps to call it a day.

DAY 4:  Nemegt valley

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-4 Accommodation: Roof Top

Distance: 210 km | Drive Time: 5 hours | Terrain: Dirt Roads

After breakfast we drive west to Nemegt Valley. Its locally known as the valley of the dragons, since it is a source of many fossil finds, including dinosaurs, dinosaur eggs and trace fossils. The drive gets more interesting and challenging as we are heading towards places where not many people venture into. From here onwards, we are officially away from civilization and have to be dependent on all the supplies we are carrying with us. Today’s drive will be through challenging dirt roads, dried river beds, and the trails would have sharp shrubs that might pose a challenge to our tires. This valley along with Khermen Tsav, which we will be visiting the next day, is part of Great Gobi A and is a treasure trove of significant paleontological and geological importance.

DAY 5: Khermen Tsav

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-5 Accommodation: Roof Top

Distance: 180 km | Drive Time: 4 hours | Terrain: Dirt Roads

We head further west into Gobi Desert towards the large multi-colored canyon called Khermen Tsav, a canyon flanked with beautiful oases. Its characterized with high natural formations of cliffs, of eroded sandstone, much more spectacular than the Flaming Cliffs. American scholar and paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews named this place “The End of the World.” The beauty of the cliffs is accentuated by small groves of native Gobi Saxaul trees.

Going through the Khermen Tsav seem like travelling through ancient city ruins with many religious stupas and temples. This area was bottom of the ancient sea and now is wonderful geological exhibition. This kind of landscape is internationally called ‘Badland’ while Mongolians called it ‘Tsav’. Deposits in Khermen Tsav includes yellow, red and white lime stones look like marble and crystal. Those deposits are dated back to geological Cretaceous Age.

The drive today will be on loose sand and it gets tricky and challenging as we head deeper into this remote and isolated part of the Gobi Desert. Way off the beaten track; you are likely to have this complex of canyons all to yourself. Enroute today, you will take a detour towards a beautiful oasis tucked deep inside the desert.

DAY 6: Nogooan Tsav

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-6 Accommodation: Roof Top

Distance: 210 km | Drive Time: Approx. 4 hours | Terrain: Dirt Roads

Spend all morning at leisure in Khermen tsav then we head west, leaving the first section of Gobi Desert and enter the Greater Gobi Regions which is divided into Great Gobi A and Great Gobi B. Since it’s a very remote and challenging route you will have to tread carefully to avoid any vehicular damage. We will stop in a small town called Shine Jinst where we will fuel the vehicles and then head to our camping grounds.

Tsav is generally defined as “fissure”, or break in the surrounding strata of rocks. Often a tsav is an outcropping of rock that contains dinosaur fossils. Nogoon (green) Tsav is located sixty miles south of the village of Shinejinst and about thirty miles north of Ekhiin Gol Oasis. We will be driving though these multi-colored cliffs and camp near the Green Cliffs, and spend the rest of the day exploring the site by foot.

DAY 7: Bayan Tooroi Village

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-7 Accommodation: Roof Top Tent

Distance: 230 km | Drive Time: Approx. 5 hours | Terrain: Dirt Roads

Today we continue our drive further into the Gobi Desert that is home to some of the extinct species like Gobi Bear, Wild camel and Wild Ass. We will spend some time exploring the region then continue our drive towards a village which has a common research center for Great Gobi A and Great Gobi B regions. The village is home to few families as well as the home to the park rangers. They hardly get to see any humans as they are so much isolated from civilization. Do not get overwhelmed with the local people as they will want to meet you and talk to you. In the afternoon, we will spend time with the park rangers and understand more about these protected regions.

DAY 8: Eej Khairkhan Mountain

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-8 Accommodation: Roof Top

Distance: 230 km | Drive Time: Approx.5 hours | Terrain: Dirt Roads

Today we enter the Great Gobi B region. The third section and final section of Gobi Desert. The great Gobi B is located on the south western edge of Mongolia. One of the most interesting places in this region is the Eej Khairkhan Mountain, located in the depression between the Mongol Altai mountain range and the Gobi Altai range. Its surrounded by oases rich with saxaul, poplar, reed and tamarisk. This place is a natural wonder, having unique formations with interesting shapes and structures naturally shaped over millions of years. The area is significant for the role it plays as a migration corridor for endangered large mammals such as argali, ibex and snow leopards. This is also a scared place for the locals as the name Eej Khairkhan literally stands for “dearest mother”, and the locals believe the mountain protects families with children. Thus, it has been venerated from generation to generation. There is a lot to explore around this place and we will setup our camp near the mountain to enjoy a beautiful dinner.

DAY 9: Altai city

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-9 Accommodation: Hotel EntumDistance: 280 km | Drive Time: Approx. 5 hours | Terrain: Dirt Roads

Having spent the last couple of days on roof top tents in the remote wilderness of Gobi Desert, it’s time for us to get back to a place where we will have a comfortable hotel and some creature comforts. After breakfast we drive to north east towards Altai city. The drive today will be through rocky trails and the mountain passes of Altai range. The city of Altai is the capital of the Gobi-Altai province in Western Mongolia. We will refuel our vehicles, and enjoy a relaxing time in the hotel amid civilization.

DAY 10: Durgun Lake – Mongol Els Sand Dune

extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-10 Accommodation: Roof Top

Distance: 380 kms | Drive Time: 6 | Terrain: Dirt Roads

We continue our journey heading north-west towards Durgun Lake, which is a part of the Great Lakes Depression and one of the remnants of a prehistoric lake. The drive today will begin with paved roads and later we again hit the dirt roads on flat steppes. In the afternoon, we will be driving along the most spectacular dunes of Mongol Els that juts out of the steppe along the Zavkhan river. Its the longest range of sand dunes in Mongolia that appeared after the Last Glacial Maximum (~20,000 years ago). We will drive through the dunes and finally reach our destination for today – Durgun Lake, located slightly west of Mongol Els. We will camp next to lake shore surrounded by dunes. This will be the most amazing camp site of this entire expedition.

DAY 11:  Mongol Els Sand Dune/Khovd town

 extreme-gobi-desert-expedition-journey-adventure-traveler-gobi-desert-mongolia-excursion-day-11 Accommodation: Steppe Hotel

Distance: 310 | Drive Time: 6 | Terrain: Dirt Roads

We wake up to see the beautiful sunrise that turns the dunes into golden color and the sands rolling down into the pristine alkaline lake. This will be our last day of epic off-road driving, and to make it even more adventurous we head out driving along the pristine dunes of Mongol Els and cross the Zavkhan river. And then head to north west towards Khovd town, one of the larger cities in Western Mongolia. The tree-lined streets give the town a more pleasant feel than other Mongolian towns. We will staying in one of the finest hotels this region has to offer. We have planned for a wonderful dinner to celebrate our final day in the Mongolian country-side.
