Expedition Itinerary

Accommodation: Crown Plaza Hotel or similar

Tibet has long been a travel destination of almost mythical proportions, a reputation cemented by the relative difficultly of getting there. A trip to Tibet requires time, effort and preparation. We will start our journey from Chengdu – the capital of Sichuan province. Once a silk brocade capital, it is pleasantly situated on the banks where the Jin and Fu Rivers intersect. Internationally, of course, the city is renowned for panda-spotting as well as its food—fiery Sichuan’s staples, such as mapo tofu and kung pao chicken, form the backbone of many Chinese restaurant menus across the globe. You are requested to arrive in Chengdu before noon. Once you land, you will be transferred to your hotel to get some rest or you may take a stroll around the city center and the famous commercial blocks. In the evening, we will have our detailed expedition briefing and also an opportunity to meet the other expedition members.

Accommodation:InterContinental Hotel or similar

Today is very important day because we need to get our temporary driving permit to drive in China. Based on our past experience it normally takes half a day. So, once we get our driving permit, then you are free to explore the town at your own pace and hit the bed early for an early morning start the next day. We will visit the world-renowned Giant Panda Breeding Research Base post lunch. One of Chengdu’s most popular attractions, located 18km north of the city centre. This is the easiest way to get a glimpse of Sichuan’s most famous residents outside of a zoo.

Accommodation:Intercontinental Hotel or similar

In the morning, you will be transferred to the airport to take our flight to Lhasa. The centre of the Tibetan Buddhist world for over a millennium, Lhasa (literally the ‘Place of the Gods’) remains largely a city of wonders. After we land, we will head to our hotel – The Intercontinental Lhasa Paradise. We call it the biggest luxury hotel at the roof top of the world, offering everything you need to relax at such high altitudes. Since we are already at 3650m, we recommend that you take this day at ease to acclimatize so we have planned for a tour to Jorkhang temple, the most sacred and active Tibetan temples, which is 1300-year-old, golden roofed building at the center of the Barkhor Market. Post that we have a early dinner and call it a day.
on this day before we call it a day.

Accommodation:Explore Lhasa

Today we spend time exploring Lhasa as well as giving enough time for everyone to acclimatize with high altitude. We will start this day by exploring few more interesting places of Lhasa. First the Potala Palace – that soars above the Holy City. Its charming whitewashed old Tibetan quarter continues to preserve the essence of traditional Tibetan life. Then we move on to see the famous debates performed by the monks at the Sera Monastery. It’s very interesting to see these monks with loud, animated and exaggerated arm movements questioning the Buddhist scriptures. After that we will head for early dinner, so that we all get enough rest before we start the most historic drive of our life.

Accommodation:Tashi Choeta Hotel or similar

We begin our epic motoring expedition today, driving along the iconic Friendship Highway. This day we would be covering 280 kms, and we will take the regular paved road straight to Shigatse, considering the speed limit on this stretch of highway. We will be arriving Shigatse post lunch, the altitude almost the same as Lhasa. Its Tibet’s second largest town and also home to the 600-year-old majestic Tashilhunpo Monastery. The monastery has a magnificent architectural style with a golden roof and resplendent buildings. After the monastery visit, we get to our hotel for dinner and rest.

Accommodation:Mt. Everest Hotel or similar

Today we will be traversing through the summit of Gyatso La Pass, at 5200 meters which is another highest point of adventure on this expedition. We will also be driving through some of the most stunning roads all the way to the Shegar. It is a small town which is considered as the gateway to Mt. Everest. The altitude is higher than Lhasa, located at 14,000 Ft. We will be staying at Mt. Everest Hotel which is only finest property that is available in such a harsh locality.

Accommodation:Mt. Everest Hotel or similar

The day we will be creating history by driving all the way to Mt. Everest Basecamp. The distance we have to cover for this journey is 140 kms and we will start very early so that we can reach the basecamp to watch the splendid sunrise at the world’s highest peak. At 17,060 feet, it offers impressive views of entire Northeast ridge and the summit. We spend quality time here assimilating every minute at the highest point of adventure in our life. Then we can visit the highest monastery in the world – Rongbuk Monastery. Lying against the backdrop of Mt. Everest (Qomolangma), the Rongbuk Monastery looks mysterious with dark red enclosure, colorful prayer streamers and white stupas. After exploring this place, we start our drive taking the same route back to Shegar where we will actually get to see the summit of Gawalu Pass. From here we could see five mountains above 8000 meters including Mt. Everest. Will be driving through some of the most stunning switchbacks which makes it one of the coolest roads on this planet. And we head to our hotel to take some rest before we start with our evening celebration with a special cultural performance by the local ethnic group. Followed by dinner and rest at the hotel.

Accommodation:Gyantse Hotel or Similar

Today we will be heading to a town called Gyantse. Taking a route which is very unique and seldom used by normal tourists. Gyantse’s greatest sight is Gyantse Kumbum, the largest chörten remaining in Tibet and one of its architectural wonders, but there’s plenty more to see. Known for its Little-visited monasteries and charming back streets. We settle down and rest for the day.

Accommodation:Intercontinental or similar

This will be the last day of our motoring expedition. Tracing a different route back to Lhasa through some stunning mountain passes and unbelievable landscapes that would take us through Khorala Glacier and to stunning views of Lake Yamdrok. The water of this holy lake takes the turquoise color to a whole new level. And then we cross the famous Kamba Pass to get one last glimpse of the lake, and then the altitude declines as we wind down to Lhasa. The road from here is flat but still we will be hovering around 3900 meters. After we reach Lhasa, we bid adieu to our expedition cars, and head to our final felicitation dinner, listening to all the wonderful stories and spending quality time with the newfound family.

Accommodation:NA

Officially the expedition ends this day. We bid adieu to Tibet and take our flight back to Chengdu and back home. You can extend the trip either with a visit to Xian, a historic and renowned place known for the Terra Cotta Warriors & Horses which is considered as the 8th World Miracle.
