In July 2024, Nomadic Road ran the Great Kalahari Rendezvous, a 14-day, 2,750-kilometre overland expedition across the Kalahari Desert, the semi-arid region that stretches across Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. The route mixed dirt roads, dry riverbeds and sand stretches deep enough to bog a 4x4 if attention slipped for a moment. Few people take on Africa overland at this scale, and the Kalahari is not a cushy trip. The convoy worked its way through landscapes that look empty until you spend time in them: kudu and gemsbok appearing alongside the track, vast salt pans glowing white at midday, and acacia-dotted plains that turn gold then red at sunset. Several days involved long sand sections where tyres had to be deflated for traction, and the late-afternoon light made even the most demanding driving feel cinematic. The July timing put the expedition in the southern African dry season, when nights drop sharply and days stay clear and dry. The group camped in private bush sites for most nights, with the occasional small lodge, and gathered around fires after long driving days. Among the participants were filmmakers, repeat Nomadic Road travellers, and first-timers drawn by the promise of an extreme overland route. By the end of the 2,750 kilometres, the Great Kalahari Rendezvous had delivered what its name promises: a gathering of overlanders in one of Africa's most demanding desert ecosystems, with the driving, wildlife and silence that make the Kalahari worth crossing. For Nomadic Road, the July 2024 Rendezvous reinforced the Kalahari's status as one of Africa's most rewarding overland routes for travellers ready to commit to genuine off-grid driving and the demands of the dry-season bush.
