Nomadic Road's February 2023 Road to Altai expedition was an eight-day, 2,600-kilometre winter overland push west across Mongolia, toward the Altai mountain region in the country's far west. The route mixed long tarmac stretches in the east with extended snow-covered sections as the convoy climbed toward Altai. February sits at the heart of Mongolian winter, with daytime highs well below zero and night-time lows pushing -30°C in the exposed western valleys. Western Mongolia is culturally different from the central and eastern parts of the country. The Kazakh community, concentrated around Bayan-Ölgii, still practises eagle hunting, and the visual identity of the region, from the cut of the deels to the architecture of the small towns, reflects centuries of Central Asian influence. The expedition built in time for cultural encounters alongside the driving. Snow-covered roads, frozen river crossings, and a couple of high passes pushed the convoy into proper winter overland territory. Several days involved late starts to let temperatures climb above the worst of the cold, and a few involved running on chains where the snow had compacted into ice. The 4x4 vehicles handled the conditions, but only because every morning started with a careful check. Evenings were spent in heated guesthouses, small lodges and one memorable family-run ger camp where the stove ran all night. The February 2023 Road to Altai delivered winter Mongolia at distance, with the cultural depth and remoteness that define the country's far western reach. For Nomadic Road, the February 2023 Altai edition reinforced the value of a winter route into Mongolia's far west, where the cold, the distance and the Kazakh cultural identity combine in ways no summer trip can replicate at this scale.
