The Ruthless RN5 runs one last time in 2026, as it has always been run. A national road in name only, for most of its length up the northeast coast of Madagascar it is a track of red clay, sand and washed-out bridges, crossed by rivers on hand-hauled ferries and bamboo barges, running between rainforest and the Indian Ocean through villages that see a vehicle a few times a season. It begins gently, in the rainforest of the east where the indri, the largest lemur alive, calls at dawn, then turns north onto the road itself: thirty kilometres in a day if the road decides, the ocean on your right the whole way. A coterie of twelve, chosen carefully, from different corners of the world, who chose the same road you did.

Nothing Discovered Later
The Drive
A Nissan Patrol with manual transmission on corrugated dirt, red-clay gullies, rock steps, axle-deep mud, beach sand that wants momentum, and rivers you cross on a barge. Thirty kilometres can take a day, and will.
The Landscape
Rainforest first, then the coast: patchy tarmac through fishing villages, river mouths, empty beaches, and the road disappearing into all of them with the Indian Ocean on your right.
The Nights
Lodges in the forest and by the sea at either end. In between, four nights in remote camps we raise ourselves, in places where no hotel has ever existed: a proper tent, carpet underfoot, mattress, bedding and towels, and a field shower and ablution block for the group.
The Table
Local and international cooking at the lodges. On the RN5, curated meals from our own field kitchen, with fresh seafood off the coast, cooked at the end of the day.
The Culture
The indri calling across the rainforest at dawn. Fishing villages, rice paddies and the spice trade of the coast. Afternoons with the fishermen, ferrymen who haul your car across by hand, and a way of life that runs on rivers and tides.

The Beginning · The Capital
Antananarivo, a welcome dinner, and the briefing that sets the road ahead.
The Rainforest · Endemic Wildlife
East out of the city into the rainforest, an easy first drive to learn the machine, and a day inside the primary forest on dirt: misty trails, chameleons and orchids, and the indri, the largest lemur alive, singing across the trees.
The Coast · Where the RN5 Begins
The main artery of the country, relentless potholes and traffic, hills flattening into humid coastal plains and the first sight of the Indian Ocean. The night in the port town where the RN5 officially begins.
The Ruthless RN5 · Where the Road Runs Out
The road the crossing is named for. North on tarmac that comes and goes, through fishing villages, to the first remote camp on the ocean. Then rutted dirt becomes red-clay gullies, rock shelves and washouts crawled in low range with a spotter out front, 30 km in ten hours. Cars loaded onto hand-hauled pontoons and bamboo rafts, broken bridges, beach that is the only road there is, and four nights in remote camps we raise ourselves. The RN5 ends at Maroantsetra, and so does the crossing, with the farewell dinner.
The End · The Flight Back to the Capital
A flight back over everything you drove, and a day in Antananarivo that is yours. It is also a buffer: this flight runs once a week and moves without warning, so if it moves, it moves without touching your flight home.
